Why give?
Giving allows us to partner with God in His work on earth. In Philippians 4:15-17, Paul acknowledges the Philippians’ support for his ministry, expressing that their giving is both a blessing to him and a way for them to participate in the spread of the gospel.
The Bible encourages us to give of our earnings as an act of obedience. In Malachi 3:10, God instructs us to bring the whole tithe. Some have suggested that this isn't necessary now that Christ has fulfilled the law, however, we must remember that tithing was established before the law (Gen 14:20), and the principle of bringing God the first fruits of our labor.
Giving is a way to show our thankfulness for the many blessings God has provided. In 2 Corinthians 9:7-11, Paul reminds us that our generosity reflects our gratitude and results in giving thanks to the Lord.
Giving is seen as an investment in eternal rewards rather than temporary, earthly possessions. In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus teaches us to store up treasures in heaven where they are secure, encouraging us to prioritize eternal values over material wealth.
God has been incredibly generous, and by giving, we get to reflect his goodness. John 3:16 highlights God’s ultimate act of generosity by giving his only begotten son, and setting a precedent for our own giving.
The Bible tells us in Matt 6:21 that where our treasure is, there will our heart be also, thus, giving is not about what we can get, or even what we give to others, it is first and foremost about the worthiness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
